Jakarta, Tuesday 20 October: student groups plan demonstrations at Tugu Tani and Tugu Proklamasi on the second anniversary of the Prabowo–Gibran government; police advise avoiding Monas, Sudirman–Thamrin and the DPR/MPR area
Student groups have announced demonstrations in central Jakarta for Tuesday 20 October 2026, two years after Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka took office. BEM UI, the University of Indonesia's student executive board, says it will join other universities and civil-society coalitions. The gathering points reported are Tugu Tani on Jalan Raya Kebon Sirih and Tugu Proklamasi in Menteng, with further action reported around the Istana. The Japanese Embassy in Indonesia issued a demonstration notice on 19 October for the same day, naming the areas around the DPR, Monas and Bundaran HI. Jakarta's traffic police unit (TMC Polda Metro Jaya) advises avoiding the Monas area, Jalan Sudirman–Thamrin and the MPR/DPR building unless necessary, and says traffic will be diverted depending on conditions. No crowd estimate has been published and the reports we read give no start time. This entry describes the plan as announced on 19 October, as of 07:47 WIB on 20 October, before any report of the demonstration itself; it will be updated if events warrant.

KSPI and Partai Buruh president Said Iqbal announces waves of labour demonstrations in 38 provinces, including DKI Jakarta, from 15 to 30 October, held in each region at local government centres, to press for a 7.5–9.5% rise in the 2027 minimum wage and clearer rules on outsourcing and severance pay. The announcement gives no date or place for Jakarta (Kompas.com). This is a separate campaign from the student action below.

The Japanese Embassy in Indonesia issues a notice headed 'Demonstration information (Jakarta: 20 October)': demonstrations by workers, students and civic groups are planned for 20 October around the DPR, Monas and Bundaran HI. We read the notice through a repost of its summary, which gives no time; we could not open the Embassy's own page.

TMC Polda Metro Jaya posts on Instagram that people should avoid the Monas area, Jalan Sudirman–Thamrin and the MPR/DPR building in Central Jakarta unless they have business there, and that traffic will be diverted depending on conditions on the ground (Kompas.com).

Kompas.com reports that BEM UI, whose chairman Yatalathof Imawan says it will join other universities and civil-society coalitions, plans to gather at Tugu Tani on Jalan Raya Kebon Sirih and at Tugu Proklamasi, both in Menteng, and that demonstrations are also planned around the Istana. It lists Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman (Bundaran HI–Dukuh Atas) and Jalan Gatot Subroto in front of the MPR/DPR building as roads with situational traffic management, and many more roads around Menteng, Thamrin, Senayan and Semanggi as likely to be congested.

Poskota names the organiser as an alliance of students called Komite Selamatkan Daulat Rakyat (Sadar), with the same two gathering points, and says the issues expected to be raised cover the economy, law enforcement, the environment, education and health — described as anticipated, not confirmed demands. We cannot say whether Sadar and BEM UI are the same grouping.
Key points
- Status: announced and scheduled, not yet reported on. As of 07:47 WIB on 20 October we had seen no report of the demonstration itself, no start time and no crowd estimate.
- Marks two years since Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka took office (Kompas.com).
- The Embassy notice exists; for street-level detail and any change on the day, use the Embassy's own advisories and TMC Polda Metro Jaya rather than this page.
- The labour campaign over the 2027 minimum wage runs 15–30 October across 38 provinces and is aimed at regional governments; we have not seen a Jakarta date or place for it.
What this means for your Indonesian entity
If your office or your staff's commute runs through Menteng, Gambir, Sudirman–Thamrin, Gatot Subroto or the Semanggi–Senayan area, expect congestion and possible diversions today, mostly from late morning; the timing is our reading, since the reports give no start time. Practical steps, which are our suggestions rather than police or Embassy instructions: (1) check TMC Polda Metro Jaya and the Embassy's advisories before leaving; (2) let staff start early, travel late or work remotely if their route crosses the areas named; (3) keep clear of any gathering that forms near you, and leave the area if it grows or conditions change. A demonstration announced in advance does not mean trouble; events like this can change quickly, and some earlier 2026 rallies near the DPR became violent (see our entry on the 27 August rally). We are not a substitute for the Japanese Embassy's real-time advisories; follow them for street-level detail, and we will update this entry if the day's events warrant.
